BBC News – US Coast Guard sinks tsunami ‘ghost ship’

It was adrift about 195 miles from Sitka, Alaska, when it was sunk, officials said.

via BBC News – US Coast Guard sinks tsunami ‘ghost ship’.

A ‘ghost ship’ of the coast of Alaska!  It had been drifting for over a year and met it’s demise in Southeast Alaska.  Demise? final resting place in 9,000 feet of sea water.

A Canadian crew tried to claim salvage rights, but they decided against it.  Also, the Alaskan coast guard decided to NOT unload the fuel from the ship.  There was 2,113 gallons of diesel on board.  Dang!  My buddy had to pay a fine for spilling 10 gallons of diesel in the Valdez Boat Harbor.  I suppose it was just too risky to pump it out.  Understandable. And, it would be in extreme poor taste to fee the Japanese for this… heart goes out to those people.

Anyway, the video of them shooting the boat is pretty cool – check it out!

Supernova

Supernova 2012aw: the pictures! | Bad Astronomy | Discover Magazine.

You all may know that I listen to Earth and Sky which begins the KNBA.org broadcast day.  Today, I was surprised to find out that ALL of the GOLD on earth is due to a very cool celestial event: The Supernova!

And Guess What?  A Supernova is visible in the sky right now.  Of course, it happened over 38 million years ago… or 28 million miles away.  It’s ridiculous the time and distances we talk about here – Astronomical, namely.

Is it true that all gold comes from supernovas?  Will there be more gold on earth now?  Interesting questions, for sure.  Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Iditarod Update: Teacher on the Trail

Target® Iditarod Teacher on the Trail™ | Target® is the Official Sponsor of the Iditarod Teacher on the Trail program

I found a cool blogger this morning.  A teacher sponsored by Target to report on all the informative and interesting bits about the Iditarod.  Posts about Robert Service and the ice and the snow and the dogs… all for school kids!

Our racers!

The Sisters are in.  Dan and Matt are close together.  But I think Jan and Bob are racing for the Red Lantern.  Perhaps Dan has too much pride to come in ‘Last Place’.  We see the last in line one way is first in line going the other way.

Race Hard and Sleep well!

These fine folks – these Hero Mushers of the Iditarod trail!  Why are are watching them as oppose to all the other racers?  Do you really need to ask in the case of the Berington Sisters?  And, Dan?  He is the Patriarch, the GRAND PAPA of the trail.  Matt?  Well, he was with Dan on the first day and we just sort of picked the rookie up.

The race is winding down.  The winners are doing brodies with their new truck.  But… out on the trail our racers are still grinding it out.   Still mushing.  Still in the wilderness.  Still hoping to see Nome and the crowds and the burled arch – the symbols that the race is over and the race is won, for them.

Good Luck, My Champions!

DRAMA ALERT!  Dallas Seavey is racing to win saying, “that he has been holding back his team, waiting to release the “monster”.  Aliy seems to have popped too early and her team is tiring before the finish.

This video – look at the body language and tone of voice – says alot.
