The Copper Basin 300 is one of Alaska\u2019s classic mid-distance sled dog races, and it\u2019s hard to imagine the endurance it takes to mush more than 300 miles through the Copper River Valley in the heart of winter. I\u2019ve known a few dog mushers and even ridden on a sled myself, but racing this distance is something else entirely. It’s seriously cold there in January. The locals will say it like this: “Five degrees (pause for effect) below zero”. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This January event runs through the country between Glennallen and the Eureka\/Tolsana region, where the Richardson and Glenn Highways meet. It\u2019s a premier winter happening for local communities and part of the broader dog-mushing circuit that includes the world-famous Iditarod.
