Richardson Highway

This picture shows the Copper river on the left and the Richardson Highway (#4) snaking up into the Chugach Mountains heading south toward Valdez through Thompson Pass. And, the Edgerton Cutoff road to Chitina and McCarthy, Alaska. There is great river rafting and fishing on the Tonsina river which cuts across the photo right to left as in flows into the Copper just around the bend from Chitina.

This final image in the tour ties several routes together. The Richardson Highway carries travelers between Valdez and Glennallen, while the Edgerton Cutoff leads toward Chitina, the McCarthy Road, and Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.

The Copper River Valley is best understood as a network of rivers, roads, passes, and small communities rather than a single destination. Use the main thumbnails page to move back through the aerial views and compare each route before planning a drive.

From here, the best next step is to return to the thumbnails and follow the tour back toward Chitina, Thompson Pass, and the broader valley overview.
