McCarthy road

This shows the McCarthy Road from another angle. You can see McCarthy. The Glacier is the Kennicott (or Kennecott? the town is one and the Glacier is spelled the other).

The big river in the center is the Nizina. You can see McCarthy creek curving out of the picture to the right, which meets the Kennecott Glacier stream at McCarthy. The Nizina and Chitina rivers meet left upper quadrant.

This is a great view of the Wrangell range. Mt. Blackburn being the highest in the back. Of course, a flightseeing tour is the best way to see these Alaskan natural wonders.

This photo is especially helpful because the McCarthy Road can feel remote from ground level. From above, the relationship between the road, the Kennicott Glacier, McCarthy Creek, and the Nizina River is much easier to understand.

Visitors usually reach this country after turning off at Chitina, then following the old rail grade toward McCarthy. The trip is slow, scenic, and worth planning carefully with fuel, tires, weather, and daylight in mind.
