Traveler’s Guide to Seward, Alaska

Activities

Alaska SeaLife Center
A center for aquatic research and marine life rehabilitation, the Alaska SeaLife Center is more than an aquarium.  Leading yourself around the exhibits is satisfying, but paying for a program such as the Octopus Encounter tour can be very rewarding, especially for kids.  Expect light to moderate activity.
Seward Museum
Spend an hour or so here before beginning your time in Seward.  Knowing about the small town’s past and its will to survive in the wake of the Great Quake of 1964 will help keep everything in perspective during your stay.  Expect light to moderate activity.
Kenai Fjords Tours
A clear Seward favorite, Kenai Fjords Tours specializes in both glacier and wildlife marine tours. It’s not unusual for the captains to have to stop their engines for orca and humpback whales.  Also look out for puffins, eagles, sea lions, sea otters, and brown bear on the coast.  Truly magical.  Expect light activity.
Seavey’s Iditaride Sled Dog Tours
Seavey’s Seward location puts visitors on a sled (in the winter, a trailer in the summer) pulled by a team of sled dogs for a memorable tour of the areas around Resurrection Bay.  Expect moderate activity and dogs.
Seward Helicopter Tours
Look into Seward Helicopter Tours for an interesting twist on flightseeing or hire them take you out on single or multi-day sea kayaking trips.  Expect moderate to intense activity.
Bardy’s Trail Rides
Bardy’s was a USA Today Top Ten trail ride in April 2010 and continues to take visitors on horse back through the flower-strewn passes of the Kenai Mountains.  Overnight trips are available.  Expect moderate to intense activity.
Sailing, Inc.
Old salts inquire within.  Sailing, Inc. gives experienced sailors the opportunity to charter their own vessel for a real self-crafted tour of the bay.  Expect moderate activity.
Liquid Adventures
Anglers looking to get where few go should check out Liquid Adventures for a day of fishing from their sit-on-top kayaks. Expect moderate activity.
Sunny Cove Kayaking
Sunny Cove mixes kayaking with some of the best hiking around Seward.  Combining the two makes for a full and active day.  Expect moderate to intense activity.
Adventure Sixty North LLC
Perhaps the most high-tech kayaking to be had in Seward, Adventure Sixty North offers multi-day packages and many safety devices such as GPS and satellite phones.  Expect moderate to intense activity.
Seward Adventure Company
Proving again that Alaska is a surprisingly good choice for a cycling vacation, the Seward Adventure Company leads cyclists on custom backcountry bike trips all over the Kenai Peninsula.  Expect intense activity.
Studio 335 Day Spa & Salon
Perhaps the last thing you’d expect in the adventure-minded sea town, Studio 335 caters mostly to those getting on or off cruise ships, but all visitors looking to relax are welcome. Come by when you’ve had enough of rough ‘n’ tumble.  Expect very light activity.
Alaskan Fishing in Seward
How can we talk about Seward without talking about fishing?  Serious anglers plan entire vacations around this town because there are dozens of different outfitters, lodges, and charter services available.  Seward is a popular spot for king and silver salmon, rockfish, lingcod and, of course, halibut.  Below are just a few of the many wonderful companies who will take you out on the big water and up the rivers near Seward.  My best advice is to ask your hotel who they recommend.  Few people come away from the Alaskan waters empty-handed.
 Day Fishing
Though they do offer other services, The Fish House is one of the more day-trip oriented companies.  Check-in for these trips is typically at 8 in the morning, and the boats usually return between 5 and 6 that evening.
Fishing Lodges
Fish Whisperer Lodge, like many fishing lodges, provides anglers with both fishing charters and clean accommodations.
Fly-in Fishing
Several companies like Scenic Mountain Air will fly you out to remote fresh-water fishing spots.  Well worth it for the serenity, especially during peak times of the year.
Hunting and Fishing
Aurora Charters LLC is good example of a company that caters to well-rounded sportsmen.  They not only offer fishing packages, but deer and black bear hunting charters as well.
